Black Butterflies are strange creatures that have appeared in several of the Cube Escape games. They are entirely decorative, but their appearance usually marks the start of the game's surreal elements.
Cube Escape: SeasonsEdit
In the Spring, there is a parrot, Harvey, kept in a cage. By feeding her birdseed, she will lay a black egg. The egg can then be boiled in hot water and placed in an egg cup. Cracking the egg with a spoon releases black butterflies until the shell is completely removed, leaving a black cube in its place.
Cube Escape: ArlesEdit
After van Gogh cuts off his ear and places it into the bowl of water, the water will begin to glow. A single black butterfly appears, and follows van Gogh as he travels further into his ear. It goes as far as the room with two doors, but stays in the ear when van Gogh enters the right door.
Cube Escape: Case 23Edit
When the Woman is found dead in her home, Detective Vandermeer is sent to investigate. He finds a Rusty Lake Mental Health flyer, and a newspaper detailing an exclusive trip to to Lake. After calling the phone number the room goes black briefly. The Woman's body is now hanging upside down, and attempting to interact with her causes black butterflies to come out of her mouth. She rises up out of view, and more black butterflies congregate at the ceiling. They form a number code to the Woman's safe, which contains photos to the Rusty Lake archive.
Cube Escape: The MillEdit
In the top floor of the Mill, there is a clock next to a small TV. When the TV is switched on, it shows the dead body of the Woman from Cube Escape: Case 23. Once she rises up out of the TV's range, her body is transported inside the clock. Opening the case releases black butterflies as the player can then move her body to the main floor.
